The Blizard Institute

The Blizard Institute is the largest institute of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and part of Queen Mary University of London. The building is named after William Blizard, who founded the London Hospital Medical College in 1785.

The design uses colour and unusual forms and includes several cell-shaped ‘pods’, housing meeting spaces and lecture theatres.

The Blizard building houses the Centre for Cell Biology and Cutaneous Research which is a collaborative environment for working on keratinocyte and epithelial biology. Key strengths include development of skin three-dimensional models, cancer biology and genetics, extracellular matrix biology, epithelial signalling and gene discovery in genetic skin and related diseases.

Neuron Pod

Neuron Pod, opened in early 2019, is Centre of the Cell’s new state-of-the-art, purpose-built learning and community space. Made from weathering steel, the monocoque structure has been designed to mimic a neuron – a nerve cell that processes and transmits information, with dendrites which appear as branches growing out of the main cell. The space is used for Centre of the Cell’s core activities, including live science shows and workshops as well as other purposes such as meetings, talks, exhibitions and commercial hire. The Pod is accessed from a bridge off the existing glazed link bridge of the Blizard Institute. If you are interested in hiring Neuron Pod, please contact info@centreofthecell.org.
